LinkedIn Stops Collecting UK Users' Data for AI 📉🤖
The U.K.'s data watchdog confirmed that LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, has halted using U.K. user data for AI model training. Stephen Almond, executive director at the Information Commissioner’s Office, welcomed LinkedIn's decision to suspend data processing following concerns raised by the ICO. Privacy experts had previously noticed a quiet update to LinkedIn's privacy policy, clarifying that U.K. users, like other European regions, are not having their data processed for AI training, with no opt-out option needed.
Microsoft Taps Nuclear Plant to Power AI ⚡🤖
Microsoft has struck a major deal with Constellation Energy to power its data centers with energy from the Three Mile Island Unit 1 nuclear plant, as the tech giant seeks reliable power for its energy-hungry AI operations. Located next to the infamous Unit 2, which melted down in 1979, Unit 1 was shut down in 2019 due to declining demand for nuclear power. Constellation now plans to invest $1.6 billion to revive the plant by 2028, pending regulatory approval.
Cruise Robotaxis Return to Bay Area After Pedestrian Crash 🚖🤖
Cruise is resuming operations in Sunnyvale and Mountain View for the first time since pausing after a robotaxi hit a pedestrian in October 2023. The company will start with human-driven vehicles for mapping, aiming to begin supervised autonomous testing of up to five robotaxis later this fall. Cruise emphasized that returning to the Bay Area is key for refining its technology in collaboration with California regulators. This comes shortly after Cruise settled with the California Public Utilities Commission, paying a $112,500 fine for not fully disclosing details of the 2023 crash.
Apple Intelligence is now available in public betas 🍏🤖
Apple has released public betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, featuring new Apple Intelligence tools like text rewriting, a redesigned Siri, and a “Clean Up” feature to remove objects from photos. To access the betas, you must register on Apple’s beta software program site. Only a few devices, including the iPhone 15 Pro, upcoming iPhone 16 models, and iPads/Macs with M1 chips or newer, can try these features. Although some Apple Intelligence tools are available now, more are expected before the final release in October.
Snap Introduces AI Video Generation Tool for Creators 🎥✨
At its annual Snap Partner Summit, Snapchat announced a new AI video-generation tool for creators, enabling select users to create videos from text prompts and soon from image prompts. The tool is launching in beta on the web for a limited group of creators, with no current plans for broader access. Although specifics were sparse during the keynote, a company spokesperson confirmed that the tool is built on Snap’s proprietary video models.
